Trauma can change the trajectory of life. Its influence can be immediate and / or triggered later, causing subtle to profound difficulties in life. Counselling can be trauma informed and/ or trauma specific treatment, depending on client need and comfort. Trauma can be like an iceberg with only part of its influence visible.
Individual needs must guide the approach for trauma work. Sometimes, dealing with current situations with the sensitivity and acknowledgment of past trauma is the best approach, sharing the specifics of past trauma is not a requirement. Other times clients may feel the burden of secrecy and need to share the specific trauma in order to feel heard. Always client comfort guides the best individual approach.
