Caring for a child or parent with significant needs is full of challenges. It requires a reservoir of personal strength that can at times feel depleted. Having supported many parents in this capacity it is clear that counselling has much to offer this demographic. A non-judgemental ear, creative problem solving, access to additional resources and / or strategies a space that is focused solely on the caregiver.
The skills required to effectively support our loved ones are lengthy and often more complex than most would consider. Support for the caregiver can help ensure that self care is taken seriously, that the caregiver has a robust toolkit of self care strategies and that their resilience is strengthened against ‘compassion fatigue’.
